Drumming is something that many shaman use and with the right protection can be very valuable. American Indians believe that rhythmic drumming represents the heart of a mother as well as the earth’s heart. To them it helps a person to remember their mother’s heartbeat which in turn causes them to remember their life’s purpose on earth.
Many shaman will use drumming for journeying. Journeying is done in the earth realm. It is the soul, body and spirit working together for personal healing. Drumming is used worldwide from American Indian, Africa, the Middle East, the Caribbean to even Tibet.
In this episode, we have Joseph Tayoun, a world-renowned percussionist explaining the spiritual and healing power of drumming. Drums cause an altered state that increase alpha waves which release endorphins (happy hormones). Joseph shares how researchers have placed heart monitors on people while in a drumming circle and within 10 minutes everybody’s heartbeats were synchronized. The researchers also monitored the brain waves of those in the drumming circle. Amazingly, just like the heart, the brain waves became identical!
The discussion continued with how healing starts during drumming. The repetitive motions begin the process and eventually move one into the zone of the beat. Joseph concludes with stating how, “Drumming forces you into the present moment, it’s a shift that you cannot resist.”
